Product Support Engineer - industrial automation (Permanent)

Location: Gloucester + some remote work

Salary: £competitive - we just want the right people !

Occasional international travel to support distributors (2 to 4 weeks per year).

My client based in Gloucester are looking at hiring Product Support Engineers, this is a hands on role!

You will be front line with the clients and customers and running projects from concept to delivery.

You must have a technical understanding and a engineering background industrial automation - PLC - SERVO DRIVES - MOTION CONTROL.

The Role:

  • You will be working as part of a team alongside our development engineers and customers.
  • Products are centred around programmable motion controllers with PLC functionality used in a broad range of industrial machines ranging from 3D printing to assembly line systems and industrial robots.
  • You will be working with our product hardware and software engineers based in the UK, Italy and Bulgaria to bring the latest automation technology to the market.
  • Alongside this, the role includes active dialogue with our customers and branch offices abroad and will require some limited travel both within and outside the UK.
  • The ability to think logically about problem solving and experience writing software in a high level structured language will be needed and some experience with electrical wiring is desirable.
  • Some prior mechanical knowledge will be helpful but training will be given where appropriate.

Specific Job Responsibilities:

  • Work with customers to support their ability to create world-class technical solutions using products, software and programming tools.
  • Assist the development department with testing and evaluating new software and hardware, giving clear feedback to development engineers.
  • Advise customers on the integration and commissioning of automation products including motion co-ordinators, high performance servo drives/motors and industrial robots.
  • Work with branch offices in USA, India and China and with ESTUN Automation in China to provide industry leading products and a world-class customer experience

Required Qualifications & Experience

Training will be given in areas which are new to the applicant.

  • Degree or similar higher qualification in Software/Mechatronics/Electronics or related discipline.
  • Worked on interfacing automation hardware; eg sensors, actuators, drives and motors.
  • A background in communications using serial, Ethernet and similar media.
  • Experienced in programming industrial automation/manufacturing machines

Having a thorough working knowledge and experience of 3 or more of the following will be beneficial:

  • Implementing and commissioning stand-alone automation computers; eg PLC or Motion Controller.
  • Good knowledge of a high level programming language; for example C, BASIC, Python.
  • PLC programming, preferably using the standard IEC61131-3 environment.
  • Electrical interfacing between a controller and sensors/actuators in an automation system.
  • Servo drives and brushless servo motors.
  • Stepper motors and drives.
  • Ethernet networks, protocols and topology.
  • A working knowledge of PCs running Windows.
  • Basic level of Windows/Linux application programming.
  • Real Time deterministic networks, eg EtherCAT, Sercos, CanOpen, Profinet RT.
  • Application and configuration of Industrial Robots.
  • Programming and configuration of touch-screen HMIs

Applicants should be a team player and be able to communicate effectively in English.

They must be legally entitled to live and work in the UK. A full driving licence is required and applicants must be eligible to obtain business visas for USA/Canada, China and India as some foreign travel may be necessary.
